Arguably one of the more controversial papercuts in our ‘Slice Of Life 2014’ exhibition, but few people disagreed with the underlying sentiment expressed in ‘Hanging in the balance’.

It reflects something we both feel very strongly about, namely the tension in our town of Tunbridge Wells (and elsewhere) between its past/heritage and its future. It is a tension that is getting more pronounced as the town continues a relentless period of expansion and development and is powerfully captured in the juxtaposition of the Church of Charles The Martyr and the construction crane towering above the bottom end of the high street. We’d like to think there’s room in this wonderful town for the irreplaceable beauty of the past and tradition while also meeting the needs of the present and future.
