Culture Shock I and II

Our ‘Culture Shock’ papercuts were inspired by one of the most controversial landmarks in Tunbridge Wells, the Millennium Clock.

The two related yet distinct designs focus on the art installation by John Mills (Metal John) at Fiveways as part of the town’s Millennium celebrations. From the outset, it split opinions very much down the middle – being applauded and denounced in equal measure. Like it or loathe it, you can’t deny it’s a striking object in its own right and the nature of its construction lends itself to our ‘Slice Of Life 2014’ papercut collection.

It was a real challenge to capture the intricacy of design in the legs of the clock as well as the subtly curved clock faces and hands. The two alternative designs (one landscape, one portrait) use the entwining metalwork of the legs as a means to incorporate our poetic summary of yet more tensions not just in our town but perhaps yours.

Back mounted on archival quality mountboard and signed by the artists, each one-off A3 black on white papercut is framed in a black, solid wood custom-made box frame.
